Following a terrorist attack on the facility on Tuesday night, some prisoners have escaped from Kuje Prisons.
Around 10:30 p.m., the terrorists launched their attack, and it is presently unknown if anyone was hurt.
Other detainees, including suspended deputy police commissioner Abba Kyari, who was remanded at the prison by a Federal High Court, were reportedly taken from the facility, it was learned.
Kyari is on trial for allegedly distributing cocaine along with the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Unit (IRT), four former members of his police unit, and two other people who were detained at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, in January of this year.
Established in 1989, Kuje Prisons includes Maximum and Minimum Holding Cells with a total of approximately 700 inmates.
The attack has been confirmed by the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS), which also stated that “Men of the Nigerian Correctional Service Armed Squad and other security agencies attached to the Custodial Centre have responded and calm has been restored to the facility and the situation is under control.”
