The attack on the Kuje Correctional Center on Tuesday in Abuja, the nation’s capital, was carried out by a Boko Haram cell backed by the Islamic State known as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
On Tuesday, SaharaReporters said that armed individuals were pursuing the facility.
One of the informants claims that the terrorists entered the building around 9:05 pm and remained there until 1:30 am on Wednesday.
He further mentioned that during the onslaught by gunmen, approximately 800 prisoners, including terrorists, escaped.
In a video made public on Wednesday, ISWAP claimed accountability for the assault.
The terrorist group showed several of its members shooting their way inside the building in the video.
The assertion follows ISWAP’s claim that one of its members killed a police officer in Suleja, Niger State.
The distance between Suleja and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, is less than 20 kilometers.
The group claimed that “soldiers of the caliphate” using automatic guns were responsible for the attack.
