Okonkwo announced his departure from the APC on Monday night via his Instagram page, citing the ruling party’s choice to run a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2023 elections.
On July 10, APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu named former Borno state governor Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
Nigerians have, however, reacted to the development in different ways.
In the interest of equity, justice, fairness, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, I just resigned from the All Progressives Congress, he wrote in the caption of the photo.
“May God deliver Nigeria from the grasping hands of those who put the pursuit of power before the pursuit of purpose.
God bless you, and to our Muslim brothers, Barka da Sallah.
Part of the statement also said that it was false to suggest that Muslims would not support a northern Christian vice president if they could freely elect southern presidents.
If this is allowed to stand, Northern Christians in Nigeria will no longer have a political future. This is in addition to the fact that they failed to uphold their primary duty of protecting Nigerians’ lives and property. The country is also in shatters.
In January, Okonkwo said he asked Igbo people to join the APC in 2019 so as to get a chance at fixing what he described as “16 years of misrule”.
In November last year, the actor also claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari has done more for south-eastern Nigeria under the ruling than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
